"Cupcake Temptation" in Artist and Illustrators magazine

Today I received my copy of the May 2015 edition of the Artist and Illustrators magazine and was delighted to see that my still life painting "Cupcake Temptation" has been published in the Portfolio Plus section.
Such a lovely way to start the Spring season :)
The cake was pretty good too!

"Cupcake Temptation" Colourful still life painting featuring cupcakes

It's nearly Christmas  so I've been busy baking.
I  don't enjoy cooking but on special occasions I will brave it into the kitchen and attempt to create  something yummy. Cupcakes are easy and fun which means they are a good option for me.
I am pleased to say that they turned out rather scrummy,
the only problem being was not to eat them all !
So much temptation on a plate!
I decided the best way to resist was to use the last one in a still life composition. I found a nice selection of items that I thought would look good together and so the painting was started ....

I slightly altered the colours to avoid too much white in the background as I wanted a stronger contrast. I'm happy with the result and I now have a cupcake that's non fattening and calorie free! ;)

"Short Circuit" Still life fun with an Aston Martin !

Once again the bleak weather has held me captive in the house! Not to be beaten or down hearted I decided to have a little fun with a still life composition.
I have a very small model of a 1922 Aston Martin that I wanted to put into a painting
1922 Aston Martin model
 I don't know why.
I just liked it and thought it's smooth, simply shape  would look good against a more geometric background.
I was looking for something equally as small and came upon an old lap top that had just what I needed. Lots of small circuits and components that I could "build" a race track and town to complete the scene.
It took quite a while to paint as the acrylic green is quite transparent.  I had to apply about 5-6 layers of paint to get the opaqueness that I wanted...

I was then able to build up the depth with washes of lighter and darker shades.
When dry the details were added .
Finally the shading and highlights brought it all to life.

"Any Port in a Storm" Fun still life painting

When Winter brings the rain, hail, gales, flooding and power cuts, the only thing to do is pour yourself a drink, relax and wait for the storms to pass. As the weather has been so awful recently I thought I would have a bit of fun with this still life painting....

"Alicia's Toy Box" Still life painting commission

I have just completed a fun and colourful still life commission.
The brief was to paint a composition that would feature a selection of favourite toys to celebrate a first birthday. I was then given free rein to create something for the occasion.
I discovered that the little girl "Alicia" lives on a farm. I thought it would be more personal to include this idea, along with her Autumn birthday and added some baby building blocks with the details
It was a delight to create and resulted in a very special keepsake....
a little bit Autumn.....a little bit farm....and a lot of Alicia's Toy Box

"Paint-Ted", Still life painting of a teddy bear

For a bit of fun I thought I would paint my little teddy bear again. The first time I painted him was for the Eightbyeight project http://www.eightbyeight.org/ ,along with a painting of a pink toy fairy
.
They were only 8" square so I thought I would paint him a bit bigger.

He sits in my room next to an old honey pot that I keep my small brushes in, watching me work with an intense look of concentration on his face. Seemed only right to paint him "in situ" :)

Today I concentrated on the left hand side of the painting. The glass of water and paint tubes are just about done.Still more to do on the bear but he's getting there...
Added the honey pot and brushes on the right hand side. It's odd painting something that sits and stares at you! A brighter photo of it today as the sun's shining at last!

The sun's still shining and I've finished painting my little bear...I hope he approves!
